The North Tahoe Firefighters Association has been an integral part of the North and West Shore since the 1950s. The Association provides two scholarships for local high school seniors, holds a raffle to purchase firefighting equipment, and provides a relief fund for its firefighters and families. The Jim Thompson Memorial Academic Scholarship honors a beloved Fire Captain from Kings Beach who later became a Division Chief with North Tahoe Fire. The Paul Scannell Memorial Vocational Scholarship is in honor of a Firefighter/Paramedic who worked as a nurse at Tahoe Forest Hospital and as a heli-ski guide. Paul was killed in a helicopter accident in the Ruby Mountains.
