Sierra Rainbow established an annual golf tournament to benefit North Tahoe High School’s (NTHS) golf team which was often hampered by lack of funds, finding themselves unable to participate in tournaments.
The first annual tournament raised about $2,000 and has grown over the years enabling the team to not only compete in tournaments, but also to support uniforms, teaching aids, and equipment to ensure equitable team participation.
The tournament was renamed in memory of Steve Munro, a gifted athlete, and former NTHS golf coach. In 2015, recently retired, Steve volunteered to coach the NTHS men’s golf team. Steve brought with him an intense desire to not only develop golf skills in young athletes but also to develop qualities for being outstanding team members. Within a year, in 2016, the men’s team won the Nevada State NIAA Golf Championship for the first time in NTHS’s history! Tragically, in 2017, Steve suffered a massive and fatal heart attack while playing a round of golf at TCGC.
The Tahoe City community was shocked and saddened by Steve’s untimely death. After considering what Steve had brought to the advancements of the local high school athletes, the owners of Sierra Rainbow decided in 2018 to rename the annual fundraiser to honor Steve Munro, and in addition, a scholarship was established in Steve’s name to enable a graduating student to help continue his or her education. The scholarship has since expanded to include both a member of the men’s and women’s teams for annual scholarships.
Requirements: Two scholarships are available, one for an athlete on each of the NTHS Girls’ and Boys’ Golf Teams maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0. A written statement is requested of the athletes to illustrate their leadership, sportsmanship, or other contributions to the team’s growth or accomplishments.
Amount: Two $1500 scholarships
