Empowering Black, Indigenous and People of Color to Lead Our Community

The Tahoe Truckee community has grown more diverse over the past 10 years. Now, we must meet that growth with more equitable opportunities for the Latinx community members to help shape our community.

The Community Collaborative has offered the On the Verge (OTV) Leadership Program to our region to foster leadership development within the nonprofit sector. In its fourth year, OTV focused the six-month program on advancing leadership opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) residents. Participants learned about the barriers BIPOC professionals face and discussed strategies to create pathways to open up more leadership opportunities. The program is led by coaches who are both OTV alumni and seasoned nonprofit professionals. The 2022 program included representation from Adventure Risk Challenge, Boys & Girls Club, Gateway Mountain Center and Sierra Community House. 

We spoke with participant Alondra Delgadillo, Family Support Manager at Sierra Community House, to learn more about her background and hear firsthand about her experience in the OTV program. Alondra received a TTCF/Tahoe Donner Giving Fund scholarship that helped to support her education at Sierra College and University of Nevada Reno, while also working five days a week and raising a young son. Her major in Psychology led her to a job at the Family Resource Center (now Sierra Community House). 

While going through the OTV program, Alondra was transitioning to a manager position where she oversees four people of color. She discussed how the program really made her feel comfortable speaking up, which is something she is working on with her direct reports. OTV opened up her awareness of microaggressions and the importance of creating a more inclusive environment for BIPOC staff members. It also helped her build relationships with other people in the field, as well as the Executive Director of Sierra Community House, Paul Bancroft, who was one of the participants.

I feel like we learn so much about ourselves and I could have never imagined myself getting to this point professionally in my life, especially so young. It made me feel empowered

Empoderando a las Personas Negras, Indígenas y de Color Para Dirigir Nuestra Comunidad

La comunidad de Tahoe Truckee ha crecido más diversa en los últimos 10 años. Ahora, nosotros necesitamos alcanzar ese crecimiento con oportunidades equitativas para la comunidad Latinx.  

La organización Community Collaborative trajo a nuestra región el programa de liderazgo On the Verge (OTV) para fomentar el desarrollo del liderazgo en el sector de organizaciones sin fines de lucro. En su cuarto año, OTV centró el programa de seis meses en el fomento de las oportunidades de liderazgo para los residentes negros, indígenas y personas de color (BIPOC). Los participantes aprendieron sobre las barreras a las que se enfrentan los profesionales BIPOC y debatieron estrategias para crear vías que abran más oportunidades de liderazgo. El programa está dirigido por instructores que son tanto ex alumnos de la OTV como profesionales experimentados de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro. El programa de 2022 incluyó una representación de Adventure Risk Challenge, Boys & Girls Club, Gateway Mountain Center y Sierra Community House. 

Hablamos con la participante Alondra Delgadillo, Gerente de Apoyo de Familia en Sierra Community House, para conocer más sobre sus antecedentes y escuchar de primera mano su experiencia en el programa OTV. Alondra recibió una beca de TTCF/Tahoe Donner Giving Fund que le ayudó a costear sus estudios en el Sierra College y en la Universidad de Nevada, Reno, al tiempo que trabajaba cinco días a la semana y criaba a su hijo pequeño. Su especialización en Psicología la llevó a trabajar en el Centro de Recursos Familiares (ahora Sierra Community House). 

Durante su participación en el programa OTV, Alondra estaba haciendo la transición a un puesto de gerente en el que supervisa a cuatro personas de color. Ella compartió cómo el programa la hizo sentirse cómoda para hablar, lo cual es algo que está trabajando con sus subordinados directos. La OTV le hizo tomar conciencia de las microagresiones y de la importancia de crear un entorno más inclusivo para los miembros del personal BIPOC. También le ayudó a establecer relaciones con otras personas del sector, así como con el Director Ejecutivo de Sierra Community House, Paul Bancroft, que fue uno de los participantes. 

Siento que aprendemos mucho sobre nosotros mismos y nunca me hubiera imaginado llegar a este punto profesional en mi vida, especialmente tan joven. Me hizo sentir empoderada
