$104,000 awarded in youth scholarships in 2016!!

TTCF is happy to announce that 17 graduating seniors received a cumulative of $104,000 in TTCF facilitated scholarships. This was the largest amount that we have ever been able to offer our young people, an increase in $31,000 from 2015!

This is thanks to the generosity of donors who either added dollars to existing scholarships or opened first-time scholarships! Two TTCF fund holders created 2016 scholarships to support young people pursuing a higher education in the arts. Tahoe Donner Giving Fund offered two scholarships this year at $2,000 each, quadrupling their scholarship dollars from 2015! In addition to the $1,000 scholarship that Mountain Area Preservation Foundation offered last year, it was able to offer two more $500 scholarships thanks to an anonymous donor!

Together, we awarded over $100,000 needs-based scholarships, over half of which went to first generation college students- two of whom are teen parents. The scholarship committee was composed of representatives from our scholarship funds and community volunteers. The committee reviews the anonymous applications and meet to discuss each scholarship over the course of a day with TTCF staff.

Scholarship applicants once again impressed our committee with exemplary commitment to their academic performance, community service, family responsibilities, and professional future. We met artists, dancers, nurses, future scientists, and leaders. In a time with extreme wealth disparity, peer pressures, bullying, and when 35% of TTUSD 11th Graders report feeling chronic feelings of sadness and hopelessness, our children are being called upon to do much more than study hard. Nevada County’s suicide rate is two times that of California according to the Department of Public Heath, and 47% of Tahoe Truckee 11th graders reported using alcohol in the past thirty days, compared with 33% of California 11th graders. Our kids need to be resilient, and they need the support of our adults.
