Girls Giving Back (GGB), the youth philanthropy project of Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s Queen of Hearts Women’s Fund (QoH), have completed their 2nd Annual Grant Cycle.
GGB members are young women under eighteen who are interested in philanthropy and making an impact in our community. So far, their focus has been on developing their own youth grant cycle which entails fundraising, evaluating grant proposals and presenting a grant to one worthy nonprofit organization in our region. Through the grants process, members engage in discerning, mature conversation around important issues in our community and are empowered to affect change. Membership has increased by more than 50% in the last year alone!
On March 10, 2016, GGB members presented a $2,500 grant to the Truckee High School Marching Band at the Truckee High School and Alder Creek Middle School joint concert. The grant will help replace the Marching Band’s worn out uniforms that were more than 40 years old.
The Marching Band’s grant proposal was written by high school senior Anna Keith. Anna was so inspired by the band’s new sense of confidence and skill since new band director, Jesse Steele, took the baton that it didn’t matter to her that she herself would never wear the new uniforms.
Anna Keith presented the grant proposal at the QoH Annual GEMS Grant Event and the band received the runner up grant for Education and Youth Development. Anna’s grant proposal made it into the GGB grants process where members eventually voted to double the QoH contribution.
Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation and QoH are grateful for the opportunity to provide a platform that empowers our community’s young people to find their voices and help shape our region.
If you are interested in learning more and supporting the Truckee Marching Band, consider attending their first ever Gala with the theme of “Gatsby” on April 22, 2016. Enjoy an evening of dancing to the big band sounds of our local marching band! Visit www.tempohigh.org.
