December 1st – December 31st, Tahoe Gives Back!
The day your nonprofit community has been waiting for has finally arrived: the Give Back Tahoe Guide for Giving is inserted in the Sierra Sun today, November 25th. Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) and Sierra Sun are overjoyed to share the missions and requests of 73 local nonprofit organizations serving North Tahoe and Truckee. The Guide for Giving is the directory for your community’s collective Giving Season which kicks off on December 1st, #GivingTuesday, and runs through December 31st.
Sierra Sun and TTCF partnered in 2014 to create a new holiday tradition for our region based off the ideals of giving back. (Read about last year’s success). With so much consumption around the holidays we wanted to reconnect with what makes the holiday season and our unique community so special: the love we have for one another and for this magical place.
TTCF has been an integral part of North Tahoe and Truckee for more than 17 years, and our story’s beginning is the epitome of a community coming together to create a significant impact. The concept of TTCF was born with a phone call from Mr. William Hewlett and his son to attorney Jim Porter. The Hewletts wanted to give the community, where they had long owned homes, a gift of $1,000,000 to create a community foundation. Furthermore, they wanted to challenge community members to join in the giving to help secure a vibrant future for this region. Mr. Hewlett promised that for every dollar given to the future foundation, he would double those gifts up to another $1,000,000.
The community rallied together and contributed whatever gifts they could, from humble sums to large. In just one year, our region took an idea floating between phone lines to a $3,000,000 reality. That is the impact of collective giving.
Now, TTCF has over $25,000,000 in assets under management that serve our region. The benefit of those funds are channeled into annual grant cycles, emergency response systems, and initiatives and campaigns that catalyze community solutions. Our board and staff work to attract new resources and convene partners around our region’s top issues to inspire giving and lead the way.
The Guide for Giving is one of these campaigns. We know the power of collective giving to make a great impact, and we want to put that power in your hands. Join us this holiday season as we unite as a community to support and elevate the nonprofits in our region.
