On Monday, a gathering of advocacy groups and community resource partners came together at the Truckee Veterans’ Hall under the leadership of Congressman Tom McClintock to discuss services available to veterans. Similarly, last week’s Resource Sharing Meeting organized by the Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee (CCTT) focused on attracting services and resources for veterans. On the heels of our nation’s Fourth of July celebration, it’s no wonder that we continue to focus on our veterans and how to better serve those who have given so much of themselves for our country.
Collectively, we know there are 2.2 million veterans living in California of which the highest percentage per capita live in Nevada County. There is a growing community awareness of veterans’ needs with an effort to bring services and resources to the Lake Tahoe region. From events honoring our military (such as the Tahoe Truckee Airshow and Family Festival) to meetings that bring together resources from Grass Valley, Reno, Placer and Nevada Counties, there is a larger community advocating for more services.
This Friday, Nevada County Arts, Friends of the Vet Hall, and Art-Health Alliance present a panel exploring Arts, Health, and Well-being programs that are available to the whole Military Continuum. Proceeds benefit Friends of the Truckee Veterans Hall, Art Health Alliance, and Truckee Open Arts Studios Tour programming. .

The call to action is simple: support our veterans. Ken Osborne with Welcome Home Vets, which provides free support and transitional services to veterans, is compiling a list of regional service providers. If you provide a service for veterans, or if you are a veteran seeking services, please contact Ken at kosborn@welcomehomevets.org.
